How to Test Your Intuition (& What To Do With Your Results)

psychic medium tools used to strengthen and improve a person's intuition

When life feels challenging, it’s hard to know which direction to turn and trust your inner guidance. You might question your past decisions and wonder if your intuition truly is leading you or if you’re making decisions based on fear or what you think you should want. Trusting yourself is not always easy, but it is always worth the work it takes to build that trust. One of the biggest decisions I’ve ever faced was leaving my corporate job and becoming a full-time psychic medium. Although I questioned my decisions along the way and felt inspired by the spirit world to change my life, my intuition was the constant thread pulling me along. Now that I work with my intuition professionally, I regularly asses my psychic skills. This helps me know I’m still developing and staying sharp in my work.

Why It's Definitely Worth Testing Your Intuition

Learning to rely on your intuition can help you live a freer life. When you trust yourself and your instincts, it’s easier to decide based on what you truly want rather than what you think you should want. Testing your intuition isn’t about seeing whether or not you are intuitive, everyone has intuition.

Being able to see how far you’ve come over time and assessing your impressions can give you confidence and point out where you might be doubting yourself or ignoring intuition when you shouldn’t. For example, I just finished a session with a repeat client. When we met several years ago, she was thinking of moving across the country and following her dream of becoming a writer. During the session, I kept getting the message that she had built this trust with herself over time. The more she trusted her intuition and instincts, the more precise they became. She told me that, yes, she had moved to California and had some of her work published. She had met her partner, who she loves, and was enjoying their life together. When we ended the session, my client reflected on how she doesn't fear the future as much anymore. Building trust in your intuition can be very freeing!

How accurate are intuition tests?

Intuition tests that you find online may not be completely accurate, but some are still worth taking to track your development. A lot of tests you’ll find online will engage your conscious mind, but this is not what you want when it comes to intuition. Your mind will interfere, and your results will suffer. The best way to test your intuition is with an open mind and self-compassion. If testing your intuition makes you feel discouraged, this can skew your results. Trying to get it right or get the answer with your mind will likely interrupt your intuition. With time and practice, you’ll be able to see improvements in your results, Stick with it, and you’ll know when your intuition is guiding you. It will become clearer over time.

7 Good Tests to Check Your Intuition

1. Practice Tuning-in

Your intuition is always available to you and sending you information. Think of your intuition like the signal on an old transistor radio. Your breath and presence help the signal come in stronger. Set a clear intention of a situation you’d like to tune into. You could ask something like, “What do I need to know about this meeting I have coming up?” Take a moment to center yourself, taking a few deep breaths. Imagine tuning into the frequency of love from within you. Be curious and aware of any symbols, feelings, words, or phrases that come to you. Write down your impressions so you can keep track of your progress.

2. Practice with tarot cards

Take a deck of tarot cards or oracle cards (if you don’t have either of these, ordinary playing cards will work with some adjustments). Give your cards a good shuffle without looking at them. Lay your cards out on a table or another large, clean surface. Move the cards around to ensure they are completely mixed up, and you won’t recognize them. All the backs should be facing up, and all the cards should look the same. Take a few breaths and center yourself. Close your eyes and let your hand move over the cards. Place your hand on a card and set the intention to tune into the card your hand is touching. Don’t try to guess which card it is; rather, let your intuition show you something about the card. How does it feel? What colors or symbols are present? If this card could speak to you, what would it say? Try this with several cards and write down your impressions. You can repeat this exercise to track your progress.

3. Dreamwork

When you are asleep, the barriers of your consciousness drop. In this state, you are deeply connected to your subconscious and intuitive mind. You might receive messages through your dreams in symbols, colors, or situations that play out. Decoding dreams isn’t always straightforward, and it helps to keep a journal or record of the impressions you receive. Look deeper into the meaning and symbolism and ask yourself, what is the overall message here? How a dream feels is more important than what it tells. You can set intentions before you fall asleep to ask your intuition to help present information clearly to you. As soon as you wake up, write down any impressions before you lose them. Setting an alarm to wake yourself and begin journaling right away can be really effective in capturing these messages. Notice how they connect to your waking life. If you receive consistent messages that are helpful to you, that’s a sign you’re intuition is improving.

4. Practice remote viewing

Remote viewing is the practice of seeking information about distant or unseen subjects and sensing information through your mind. Have you ever imagined traveling to another place and felt like you were there? The science of remote viewing has been studied for decades by scientists and the CIA. Research shows that with practice, anyone can strengthen the skills it takes to tune into people, places, and objects and that this modality transcends time and space.

To practice remote viewing, you’ll need a partner to set up a target for you. This could be a photograph of a location that you place in a sealed envelope. As a remote viewer, you should not know what is in the envelope before you practice. Once you have your target location, try these steps to practice tuning in. You’ll want to record your impressions so that you can track your progress.

  1. Bring yourself into a meditative and relaxed state.
  2. Write down anything you want to let off or distracting thoughts.
  3. Call the first target to mind.
  4. Write down basic impressions: Do you sense something natural or artificial? Land or Water? Notice the sky or ceiling.
  5. Try not to second-guess yourself ;)
  6. Notice any sensations or emotions.
  7. What smells, tastes, and temperatures do you notice?
  8. What sizes? Shapes or patterns?
  9. Sketch freely on your paper anything that feels relevant. This might be a small detail or a vague structure or shape.
  10. Take a bird’s eye view of the target.

Write down all your impressions with a pen and paper or in your favorite journal. You can practice this exercise as many times as you’d like.

5. Practice psychometry with objects

The word psychometry derives from the Greek word “psyche,” meaning soul, and “metro,” meaning to measure, and refers to the psychic ability to read or sense energy from an object. Objects and photographs hold energy and information that can easily be accessed through intuition, like a story wanting to be told.  Ask a friend to have you hold an object of theirs (an heirloom or something that belonged to someone they know will work best). Pay attention to what you notice as you hold the object and tune into the energy it holds. If you have trouble getting started, it can help to pretend you are “making up a story” about the object. Then, ask your friend if they can validate any of the information you've shared. You might be amazed at what you can learn! You can also practice this exercise with a photograph. Ask a friend for a photograph to practice reading and tuning into energy. Make sure it’s a photograph of someone they know enough to help you validate your impressions.

6. Practice visualization and tune into future events

This is one of my favorite ways to train my intuition. Most people who try this are amazed at certain intuitive messages they receive by tuning into simple everyday activities. You can ask your intuition to help you with practical things. When you have a decision to make, go with how you feel rather than what your mind is telling you. When you’re in the store checkout, choose a line to stand in that feels like it will be quicker rather than how it looks. You can do the same thing with finding a parking space or finding an easy route home. When I drive to my office in the morning, I try to visualize what cars will be there and where I will park. Last week, I did this and saw an image of the White House. When I arrived, there was a white Mercedes parked out front with a vanity license plate that said PRES. Messages from your intuition might not always be exactly what you expect.

7. Telepathy with a friend

Having a friend to practice and share your intuitive journey with is fun and validating. If you can find someone willing to practice, you might notice that your intuitive abilities are amplified. This is especially true when your energy is in synch. Make sure you find a partner who’s not going to judge or make you feel self-conscious (that’s likely to have the opposite effect). Sit facing one another and take turns sending a thought back and forth to one another. You might choose a category like a color, number, or memory. I like using memories or symbols because there are an infinite number of possibilities. Keeping it really open lets my conscious mind move aside and resist trying to figure out the answer (using my analytical mind). If you’re comfortable with it, you might try holding hands to amp things up. Hold your hands out in front of you and have them place their hands on top. The sender should bring to mind a thought and imagine projecting it to the recipient.

What To Do With Your Test Results

The results of testing your intuition can vary based on how attached you are to a specific outcome. Remember that no matter what your results, you are intuitive and you can improve your natural intuitive abilities with practice.  If you’ve tried any of the “tests” above and kept track over time, you may start to get a sense of how your intuition is developing.

Low Intuition

If you feel you have low intuition results, this is likely because your mind is getting involved when you tune in. Practice taking a few moments to breathe and clear your mind and energy before tuning in. It’s also important to practice when you’re not feeling tied to a specific outcome. Try lowering the stakes. If you find yourself getting discouraged, take a break and do something to restore your energy. Go outside in nature, listen to music, or spend some quiet time journaling; something you enjoy makes you feel nourished. Having a busy mind does not mean you aren’t intuitive. It’s likely that you’re struggling to connect inwards because of distractions. Practice grounding in your own energy and have compassion for yourself.

High Intuition

If your strong intuitive impressions feel like a superpower, it’s because they are. Remember that intuition is not about “knowing things” or “getting it right all the time.” Intuition is about living a life that’s grounded in your truth and authenticity. You might be feeling like you want to share your abilities with others or meet other people who are developing their intuition. You might check out local holistic centers or join a practice group that focuses on intuition. When you’re paying attention to your abilities, you might notice that people with the same interests or abilities start to come into your life.

How often should I test my intuition?

As a professional psychic medium, I find that I am “testing” my intuition constantly. I think of it more as an exercise for my psychic skills, and it’s a natural part of my life. If you feel good about practicing, you can “test” your intuition as often as you like. Your intuitive senses are going to be communicating to you daily, whether you realize it or not. When you feel energetically low or especially distracted, it can be a good idea to take a break and step back. If you’ve been journaling and tracking your results, you might look back on them on a monthly basis. The new moon is a time that I pause and take stock of my goals and where I’m setting my intention for the month ahead. You can use the lunar calendar as a guide for noticing your intuitive progress.

Takeaways

Everyone is intuitive, and with practice, you can strengthen your psychic abilities over time. The results of online intuition tests aren’t always accurate because they engage your conscious mind. I recommend trying the “tests” above to build your confidence and track your progress over time. If you feel stressed about your results, it’s a good idea to take a break and rebalance your energy. Developing your intuition is a lifelong learning process that can help you live a freer life aligned with your purpose.
